What’s the definition of adventuring?

first_imgSummer at Snowshoe might just be the quintessential definition of adventuring. A chance to increase your vocabulary, as you stockpile new skills and thrills. A place where hiking-boot-mornings turn to bikini-afternoons, fishing flies are chosen as wisely as swinging clubs, and the thirst for gravity and velocity never goes unquenched. Where a perfectly banked downhill mountain bike line is worshiped as much as a perfectly seared scallop. And where every day is an invitation for more adventure, and more sticky memories. Zika in Pennsylvania: What Do I Need to Know?

first_imgLike Governor Tom Wolf on Facebook: Zika in Pennsylvania: What Do I Need to Know? By: Sophie Stone, Deputy Press Secretary July 06, 2016 Public Health,  The Blog,  Zika What is Zika? The Zika virus is a generally mild illness that is spread primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. The current Zika virus outbreak began in May 2015 in Brazil. This outbreak led to reports of a neurological disease called Guillain-Barré syndrome, and pregnant women soon reported giving birth to babies with birth defects such as microcephaly. The outbreak has since spread to other countries and areas. This prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue travel notices to regions where the Zika virus transmission is ongoing. What is Pennsylvania doing to protect its residents? In response to the emerging disease, the Wolf Administration has created a Zika Response Plan. The Pennsylvania Department of Health and Department of Environmental Protection have announced this Zika Response Plan to prepare for Zika virus testing, to enhance surveillance and control of mosquito populations that can spread Zika virus, and to enhance surveillance for Zika cases in Pennsylvania. What are the symptoms of the Zika virus?Common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). How is the Zika virus spread? The Zika virus is mainly spread from the bite of an infected mosquito to a person. The Zika virus can spread through sexual contact from a male partner who has been infected with the virus. Although less common, the Zika virus can also be spread from a mother to baby during pregnancy or during the time of birth or through blood transfusion. How dangerous is the Zika virus? Most people infected with Zika have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. However, pregnant women who are infected with Zika have a greater risk of babies born with microcephaly, a birth defect where the baby’s head is smaller than expected, or other birth defects. In past outbreaks, there have also been rare reports of Guillain-Barré Syndrome and other neurological conditions.People rarely die from the Zika virus. Is there a treatment or a vaccine for Zika? There are no vaccines or medication to prevent or treat Zika virus infections. If someone becomes ill after being infected with the virus, the symptoms should be treated by getting rest, drinking fluids to prevent dehydration, and taking medicines such as acetaminophen to relieve fever and pain.Aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen or naproxen, should be avoided. Is it safe for me to travel to other countries? The CDC has issued travel notices to regions where the Zika virus transmission is ongoing. Travelers in these destinations should take extra steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites.Pregnant women (or women planning to become pregnant within 3 months of travel) should avoid travel to regions with active Zika virus transmission. If you’re planning to attend the 2016 Olympics, take extra precautions to keep yourself safe. How can I protect myself from the Zika virus? The best way to prevent Zika is to avoid mosquito bites. To do this:Use an EPA-registered insect repellent. EPA-registered repellents are safe for pregnant women and children to use, but be sure to check the product label for any warnings and follow the instructions closely. When indoors, use air conditioning, window screens or insecticide-treated mosquito netting to keep mosquitoes out of the home.Reduce the number of mosquitoes outside the home or hotel room by emptying or routinely changing standing water from containers such as flowerpots, pet dishes and bird baths.Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors. You can also protect yourself by avoiding sexual contact with a partner who traveled to a Zika-affected area or use a condom correctly each time you have sex. For more information, visit the Zika Virus Prevention page.Have there been cases of Zika in Pennsylvania? There have been cases in travelers who have returned from areas where Zika virus is common.Local transmission of Zika virus (virus acquired from local mosquitoes) has not been identified in Pennsylvania or anywhere in the continental U.S.Can my pets get Zika? There have been no reports of pets or other types of animals becoming sick with Zika. What should I do if I think I have Zika?Contact your healthcare provider if you have symptoms of the Zika virus and have been to an affected area in the past two weeks or had recent sexual contact with a male partner who was exposed to Zika. Your healthcare provider may test your blood or urine for the Zika virus and other similar illnesses. If you are pregnant and traveled to a Zika-affected area within the last 12 weeks, your healthcare provider may test your blood or urine for the Zika virus even if you have not experienced symptoms of Zika virus. What if I have the Zika virus? How can I protect others from getting sick?During the first week of infection, Zika can be found in your blood and passed to a mosquito that bites you. An infected mosquito can then spread the virus to other people. To prevent others from getting sick, strictly avoid all mosquito bites during the first week of illness.Zika virus can also be spread during sex by a man infected with Zika virus to his sex partner(s). It is still unknown how long the virus can be spread through sex, but it may be 6 months or longer. To prevent Zika from spreading, use condoms correctly every time you have sex or abstain from sex. How long to continue using a condom or waiting to have sex depends on the couple’s situation and concerns.Zika virus could also be spread through blood transfusions. If you have had the Zika virus, do not donate blood at this time.   SHARE  TWEET SHARE Email Facebook Twitterlast_img read more

Samuel L Jackson graces Sunshine Tour

first_img“I played here before many years ago and I like this course. It’s straightforward, it’s honest, and if you hit the ball where you are supposed to, you can score.” He is currently filming the live action remake of the 1998 Japanese anime classic Kite in Johannesburg, but jumped at the chance to take a break from the set and get out on the golf course, even if he didn’t expect to play to his usual standard. And the popular Hollywood screen actor was all business when he pitched up at the Telkom PGA Championship Pro-Am on Tuesday, jumping at an invitation from Sunshine Tour executive director Selwyn Nathan to join the action at Country Club Johannesburg. “I had a great birdie streak from the sixth to the eighth, but it hardly mattered because Sam and Selwyn are chewing up the golf course,” the Queenstown golfer said. Jackson once stated that the golf course is the only place where he can “go dressed as a pimp and fit in perfectly”. His pink, candy-striped shorts and perky white and red beach hat ensemble perfectly complimented his playing partners – James Kamte in pink and lavender, Nathan in white from head to toe, and Nathan’s son Daniel, looking dapper in white and grey. ‘I played here before’ In addition to Kamte, the field for this week’s R3 750 000 Telkom PGA Championship includes world number 50 Richard Sterne, defending champion Keith Horne, three other former champions and more than 20 Sunshine Tour winners. “I never pass up on the chance to play golf, especially when I get to play at a top course like this,” he said. Samuel L Jackson has played the bad guy, the good guy, the bad cop, the good cop, drug addicts, action heroes and more recently, a slave. By his own admission, he’ll do almost anything to get a laugh, but one place Jackson will never play the fool is on the golf course. Source: Sunshine Tour True to form, he made a bee-line for the driving range as soon as he arrived. “Sam is very, very competitive,” said playing partner James Kamte. “A few years back, we scheduled a practice round together before the Alfred Dunhill Links. That day the wind was howling and it was pouring. Everyone else pulled out, but he was there with bells on.” A proficient golfer, who plays off a tidy six-handicap, Jackson didn’t waste any time contributing to his team’s score and, combined with former professional Nathan, the pair soon had Kamte playing some of his best golf this season. 13 March 2013 But none of them could match the presence of Jackson, who charmed everyone from caddies, to players, scorers and rules officials. “I’m just disappointed that they didn’t send me the R1 driver. It’s an adjustment, but I won’t say I know what Rory [McIlroy] is going through.” “These irons can fly, although I would attribute that to the altitude here, as opposed to my golfing ability. I can’t wait to give them a real test and find out what they play like at sea level when I get home. ‘Man, I love these Rocketballz’Jackson played the first in regulation, but carved his tee shot at the second into the right rough. A frisky six-iron saw him on the dance floor in two. “Man, I love these Rocketballz,” he gushed. One of Hollywood’s highest grossing stars, Jackson’s movie credits include such blockbusters as Jungle Fever, Pulp Fiction, Shaft and the recently critically acclaimed Django Unchained. ‘Perfect fourball“I might as well not be playing, but it does feel good to be making some long birdie putts again. This has been the perfect fourball to get me into fighting form for the tournament. With them being so competitive, they are forcing me to bring my A-game. I can’t have them outplaying me.” When it comes to chasing a bad guy on screen, the 64-year-old actor might let a stunt double take the punches, but when it comes to chasing after a little white ball, Jackson is a Jedi-powered golfing machine. “Just for the record, though, that tee shot went exactly where I intended it to go. The guys told me to take the short cut and Tiger line it to the green. They just didn’t realise I’m not Tiger.” “The people here in South Africa are great,” he said. “It looks like they enjoy seeing me there. I guess I’m a lot more recognisable than I thought,” he laughed. “I got the call from Selwyn and what can I say, here I am,” said Jackson, who has a special clause in all his film contracts that allows him time off to play golf. ‘Sam is very, very competitive’ “Actually, I don’t expect to do to well today,” he said. “I’ve been playing Titleist all my life, but I met these guys from Taylormade and they knew I was coming out here, so they set me up with these clubs. They take some getting use to. “When I’m playing golf, I like to look the part,” Jackson said. “I like to wear good tartan, or maybe a bright pink or yellow ’cause it helps people find me when I’m lost in the rough.” last_img read more

Poll: Android Fragmentation Issues

first_imgTags:#Android#mobile#Poll Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Related Posts Image credit: Ubergizmo This week, a survey of Android developers conducted by Baird’s William Powers was highlighted by CNN’s Fortune blog in a post titled “Android is a Mess, Say Developers.” The results showed that a large number of developers have begun to build Android applications – in fact, 71% said they were building for Android, while 62% said they were building for iOS. But Fortune’s blogger, the pro-Apple Philip Elmer DeWitt focused on another aspect of the survey’s results: the problems that building for Android entails. At the top of the list was the fragmentation issue, with 56% of developers saying it was a “meaningful” or “huge” problem. Do you agree? Let us know in this week’s poll.Fragmentation is Real, but How Much of a Problem? This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this complaint from developers. Fragmentation, not just of the OS itself, but the large number of Android devices and form factors out there, means that developers have to deal with a much more complicated environment than they do when building for the iPhone or iPad.According to the survey, 24% of developers said fragmentation was a “huge” problem, 33% said it was a “meaningful” problem, 13% said it was somewhat of a problem and 17% said it was a problem. Only 14% said it was not a problem. In addition, the survey asked about other issues, like store fragmentation (due to the alternative marketplaces for apps), ease of development, app visibility and the ability to get paid. Apparently, fragmentation made Android difficult to build for, because iOS beat it here on the “ease of development” question. What also interested us in reading through this news were the comments on the original blog post. A sampling:..Android development is significantly easier because I’m a Java developer. Objective-C is only used on Apple…I’d have to learn a whole new language to build apps for the iPhone…Fragmentation can be solved by specifying hardware requirements in your manifest file. I’ve been developing for both and Android development is much easier. Am I alone in this opinion?Seems to me that the universe of this poll is way too limited. I develop for both and I think Android is much easier. Of course fragmentation is an issue but, like in any product develop cycle, you have to define who is the target of your product.Seems odd to me that IOS is rated as easier to develop on, for the simple reason that Android development is done in Java, a language most developers new to the platform already know. Objective C is an elegant language, but it does have a learning curve. What if Android is fragmented…what developers care for: “is there an audience big enough for me to make money?” If yes, they will go through any amount of pain. As an Android developer with over 30,000 downloads I can say that “fragmentation” is a problem, but its a problem in the same way the CSS browser incompatibly is a problem. Yes its annoying but nobody is calling HTML/CSS “fragmented”.Missing the trees for the forest. Developers are CHOOSING Android first DESPITE what laypersons refer to as fragmentation. That should tell you something, namely that Android is a much more preferable development environment than iOS.So, what do you think? Is Android fragmentation the “huge” and “meaningful” problem this survey says it is? And does that mean it makes Android much harder to build for? And by the way, how is it that the survey asked if something is a problem, a huge problem, a meaningful problem or somewhat of a problem all in the same question? Really?! How about something a little more straightforward? Is Android development a problem or not, or only somewhat? You tell us – in what’s hopefully a little less biased of a poll question. sarah perez The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technologylast_img read more

Video: Former Michigan Star Chris Webber Discusses Fab Five, Thinks Ex-Teammates Exaggerate Their Importance

first_imgdan Patrick talks with Chris Webber about a Fab five.dan patrick chris webber fab fiveFormer NBA and Michigan basketball star Chris Webber went on The Dan Patrick Show Wednesday morning. The current NBA analyst for Turner Sports discussed a number of things with Dan Patrick, including, most notably, his time with the Wolverines and ESPN’s 30 for 30 “Fab Five” documentary, which Webber was not a part of. While on that topic, Webber seemed to criticize some of his former teammates, who he says exaggerated their importance in the film. “My whole thing has been it’s always been about us five,” he told Patrick. “And so when one guy has a million highlights in there of himself like he was the leading scorer, like when the stories are all after and embellished it’s just a little hard for me. But I think it was entertaining, there was a lot of truth in it.”Here’s the full interview: last_img read more
