APU, Biola stars get GSAC honors

Jones increased his scoring average from 14.8 during nonconference games to 15.7 points in GSAC play and maintained his 8.5 rebounds per game for the Eagles, who have struggled for the past two seasons to middle-of-the-pack finishes. Numerous Azusa Pacific and Biola players were named to the All-Golden State Athletic Conference basketball team on Tuesday. For the men, the Cougars tied San Diego Christian for the most players named to the team, with seniors Demario Butler, Scott Zea and Tristan King each receiving the honor. APU’s women’s team had two honorees. Senior guard Monica Somers, who led the GSAC in scoring at 21.4 points per game, and junior forward Abby Johnson were named to the team. Johnson had seven double-doubles this season and averaged 13.8 points and a team-high 7.6 rebounds per outing for the Cougars, who have had their best season in decades. Sophomore center Megann Alberts, who averaged a double-double and led Biola with 19 points and 10 rebounds per game, was the only selection for the Eagles. She was her team’s high scorer in 22 of Biola’s 27 games and eclipsed the 30-point mark twice, including a 36-point, 19-rebound outing in a win over Cal Baptist. The University of La Verne women’s basketball team, plays at Chapman today at 7 p.m in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. center_img Raya has led the Leopards (19-6) in various categories, including steals and free-throw percentage, and is second in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in scoring. Jones leads the SCIAC in scoring (17.5) and rebounding (10.8). It’s the third time La Verne will play the Panthers this season. The Leopards have lost both meetings. Second-year Golden Eagles men’s basketball coach Stephen Thompson will be honored with the Vic Hanson Medal of Excellence at the 36th Annual Syracuse University Hardwood Fund Basketball Celebration on March 5.
