Woman 77 gets 3 months for shooting neighbor

first_imgA 77-year-old Hazel Dell woman, affectionately known by some as “Grandma Mary,” pleaded guilty this morning to second-degree assault and was sentenced to three months in jail for shooting a neighbor in 2008.Following the hearing, defense attorney Jeff Barrar escorted Mary Billy, who uses the assistance of a walker, to the Clark County Jail to begin serving an 88-day sentence.Billy shot her neighbor, Aleksey Guzeyev, on Aug. 2, 2008, following a long-simmering property line dispute in their neighborhood in the 1800 block of Northeast 82nd Street. Guzeyev had been putting in a fence post when Billy, upset because she thought it was on her property, fired her pistol twice. The victim, who was hit once in the arm, has since recovered. In handing down his sentence, Clark County Superior Court Judge John Nichols addressed how punishing an elderly woman with no criminal history was a delicate situation.“The system isn’t set up to handle a situation like this,” he said. “I think three months is going to be plenty punishment.”last_img read more
