been called a no-ball as it bounced twice on the pitch (Source: AP) Top News On a pitch that started to turn square from the first session of play it seemed like the spinners would have most of the say throughout the day India’s premier spin twins of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja go into the groove within the first twenty overs itself However it was left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja who managed to pull off a rare mystery delivery which brought smiles on everyone in the field Though this is not the first time that Jadeja has managed to pull off such a delivery India vs Australia Live Score In the 57th over Jadeja with his tail up made a real hash of his second delivery to Peter Handscomb as it bounced twice on its way past the batsman Handscomb in turn tried taking a decent old swipe at it but missed it and then had a laugh He wouldn’t have been smiling if he’d nicked it The ball actually slipped out of Jadeja’s hand as it got stuck to his palm scooted along the surface outside off which resulted in giggles all round especially by the batsmen and the bowler Technically it should have been called a no-ball As per the rules of the game if the ball bounces more than two times then it is supposed to be declared as a no-ball However umpire Nigel Llong did not signal anything and had Handscomb edged it then who knows what might be the result Wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha was ready to go up as there was every chance of getting the batsman out caught behind However Jadeja quickly went back to business and then produced one of his more typical no-balls somehow over-stepping again them calling for an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation Soon a slew of security measures were suggested with the bankers who agreed to implement the same The matter had assumed more urgency after an incident in Bengaluru wherein a woman was robbed at knife-point inside an ATM Security of ATMs has always been a complicated issue with the bankers and the police trying to pass the buck on to each other With ATMs becoming an integral part of our lives (RBI data shows that the total volume of ATM transaction in November for the country stood at Rs 215114377 million) security for these kiosks have become an important issue Back in 2013 the Reserve Bank of India had issued a series of guidelines for the ATMs one of which mandated the compulsory posting of guards in the ATM Team Newsline did a reality-check at various ATM kiosks in Pune city and Pimpri-Chinchwad to find out whether security measures are in place at the ATMs only to find that there are some serious loopholes Karve Road sinhagad road AUTOMATED TeLLER Machines (ATMs) on Karve Road and Sinhagad Road have security guards posted round-the-clock but they are seen standing outside the ATM centres loitering around rather than keeping a watch on the ATM centre What we saw The security guards were seen acting as operators informing the public on how to use the ATM machine rather than keeping a watch on the centre At some places where the ATMs are attached to the branches of respective banks there is only one security guard manning the bank as well as the ATM centre The banks do have information boards on security measures and there are no circulars on how customers should tackle problems while using the machine The CCTV or an inbuilt camera at the ATM machine is the only reliable safety measure rather than the security person manning the area BT Kawade road On the stretch of BT Kawade Road there are nearly 10 ATM centres of various banks out of which just 2-3 have security guards present at never ever seen a guard here’’said an IT professional who did not wish to be named at ICICI branch on Salunkhe Vihar road What we saw Majority of the ATMs operated by the Nationalised bank on the NIBM/Salunkhe VIhar road were manned while the private banks seem to rely more on close circuit televisions to address their security concerns Among the nationalised banks ATMs of Punjab National Bank on Salunkhe Vihar Road and Bank of Maharashtra’s ATM near the post office were operating without security guards The ATMs of ICICI Bank and HDFC on Salunkhe Vihar Road and NIBM Road were also without security guards However these were attached to the operational branches of the bank which had their own security guards The Bank of Maharashtra ATM on Salunkhe Vihar Road’s security guard said that heavily-tinted glass doors and lack of security personnel manning the area While the idea may have been to give some privacy to the ATM users while they are making their transactions but the lack of security does raise one doubt — what if someone is using the ATM during late night with no security around What we saw ATM cabins are located off the parking lot nearly at the end of the railway station There are ATMs of four different banks in a row but none of them have a security guard present at the spot At the Union Bank ATM there is a poster on the duties of a security guard and what he should do in case of an emergency but no sign of anyone to follow it Also the posters or information on emergency contact number and procedure to follow in case of emergencies like card blockage currency note problems etc are missing in almost all ATMs here The Canara Bank ATM has an emergency switch behind the ATM machine but no information available about it anywhere A security guard seen a begun and the work order for the project is expected to be issued in three months’ time after a contractor has been finalised Considered to be a unique initiative the tender mandates disposal of 30 lakh metric tonnes of existing waste following which the land will be reclaimed and converted into an open space for the general public While the process of awarding the contractor is expected to take three months the four-year tender costing Rs 270 crore will allow the contractor a period of one year to mobilise resources The pre-bid conference for the contract will be held on May 19 and work on the ground is expected to begin by September next year “The initiative of reclaiming land and converting it into an open space for public use is being done for the first time in the country No development will be allowed on this land” said Vijay Balamwar Deputy Municipal Commissioner in the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department He added that dumping at the Mulund site would be stopped in a day or two to ensure that the quantum of waste does not increase Share This Article Related Article Though the tender document sets a target of disposing 30 lakh metric tonnes by the next four years officials in the SWM department were unable to ascertain the amount of waste which would remain after the disposal “The target of 30 lakh metric tonnes is more than 50 per cent of the total waste However it is not possible to ascertain the total amount of waste since dumping is still going on We will take a call on the future course of action after three years” said an official Other aspects of the project includes clearing a land of approximately four hectares needed for the waste processing plant clearing of the spillover area and slope stabilization of the remaining dumping site with a 9-m wide peripheral road Environmentalists and activists are not too hopeful about the project since the BMC is yet to achieve segregation of waste on a widescale Rishi Aggarwal an environmentalist said the project was likely to fail “The BMC has not used a standard unit of measurement and thus doesn’t know how much waste is present at the Mulund dumping ground How can they then set their goals Furthermore in order to do anything on a dumping ground there has to be a five-year cooling period which allows the gases trapped below the surface to be released” he said Aggarwal argued that even with the disposal of a large quantity of waste the scientific closure of the dumping ground can only take place if the quantum of waste is reduced at the source “The SWM department has to reduce the city’s waste by 50 per cent by strict enforcement of segregation at source as well as other measures like composting Without that the current model will not succeed in the given time-frame especially since Taloja is still not operational” he said Spread out over 24 hectares the Mulund dumping ground has been operational for more than 40 years now There are mountains of garbage ranging between 8-30 metres high which have spilled onto adjoining areas As per BMC records a contour survey conducted in September last year recorded a total volume of 535 million cubic metres of waste For all the latest
