Pallekele after India lost seven wickets for 22 runs.Bhuvneshwar played a 53-run knock to make a 100-run partnership with Dhoni for an unbeaten eight wicket “When I went in to bat MS told me to play my natural game like I play in Test cricket and don’t take any pressure as we had a lot of overs at that time We knew if we played them out we would chase easily” Bhuvneshwar said at the post match press conference in Pallekele “I knew there is nothing to lose in this situation as we were already seven down I was just thinking that I can play and that I have to support MS as much as I can And that’s what I tried to do” he said Sri Lanka’s young off-spinner Akila Dananjaya showed some magic with the ball picking up six wickets for 54 which also included his first five wicket haul in one-day cricket On being asked about India’s collapse Bhuvneshwar said “It was a little surprising because we had a very good opening partnership Then 3-4 wickets fell quickly so it was a bit of a panic situation for us There was no message as such from the dressing room or MS Dhoni He added: “The only thing was they wanted me to play as long as possible I also wanted to do the same thing because that was the only chance to win if I could play all those 47 overs That was my plan” Bhuvneshwar also told about his plan against Dananjaya when he came out to bat in such pressure situation”I had a plan against him” “He is an off-spinner but he was also bowling leg spinners and googlies so it was a surprise for us I just wanted to play him for the wrong one or the googlies which he was bringing in to me And whatever was going away from me I wasn’t really worried about that “Whatever wickets he took that was on the googly the incoming delivery so my plan was to counter his incoming deliveries Initially it was a bit difficult to read him from the hand but later on when I played him for 10-15 balls I could read his variations” he explained Bhuvneshwar got away with a DRS shout for LBW and then went on to attack the Lankan bowlers helping Dhoni from the other end finishing the match with 16 balls to spare “It was a normal plan because we knew that we didn’t need to do anything different We tried that whatever opportunity we get for singles or doubles we will not leave that because by adding singles we wouldn’t reach a stage of needing 6-7 runs per over as we didn’t have many batsmen left We weren’t running extra hard or trying to do anything special We just played normally” said Bhuvneshwar “MS said play as you want to play So at one particular stage I felt that I could play some attacking but risk free shots on which I had full confidence So it’s not like that he gave me any responsibility or asked me to play any big shots It’s just that the stage was such that I had confidence on myself that if I get such a ball I can hit it” he added This was Bhuvneshwar’s first half-century in ODIs and with this he became the first Indian batsman at number nine to score a fifty after Praveen Kumar “I never thought in my dreams that I would score fifty in One-dayers Not fifty but match winning knock because One Day is a kind of format which doesn’t suit my batting as I am not the kind of batsman who can hit big sixes But that kind of situation was perfect for me because it was totally a Test match situation” He also praised India’s bowling coach Sanjay Bangar for his innings “Thanks to Sanjay Bangar he was working really hard on me during the Test series Whenever I go into the nets Bangar helps me to counter those things like I have to go through the last session of a Test So it was same kind of situation and that was a bit familiar for me” he signed off For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App IE Online Media Services Pvt Ltd More Related Rahane 103 took the wind out of the sails of the fielding side on Day One of the second Test (Source: AP) Related News Scrunching the ball through the vast expanses on the leg-side Cheteshwar Pujara set off for his 99th run When he turned back for his 100th run Ajinkya Rahane had begun swishing his fists in the air As they passed each other they stopped for a fist punch before Pujara completed his hundred removed his helmet and smiled before acknowledging the appreciation of the dressing room and the motley handful in the crowd Exactly 105 balls later Pujara didn’t even wait for Rahane’s approval before steaming down the other end for the single that would complete the latter’s hundred After 28 balls the fatigued pair clambered up the narrow stairs of the dressing room their association of 211 runs still intact thus maximising India’s incredible fortune with the toss on a progressively deteriorating surface India’s 344/3 was the kind of head start that had the potential to make this yet another one-sided Test match This is the longest they have batted together — Pujara usually tags along with Murali Vijay and Rahane with Virat Kohli Not that they haven’t wriggled India out of emergencies in the past—the most glaring proof was their 118-run association in Bangalore in the second innings against Australia on a spiteful pitch (to put it mildly) combating a bowling firm more purposeful and persistent that the three-pronged Sri Lanka’s spin attack The latter was series defining; this one could turn out to be one though the conditions were considerably less hostile than it was in Bangalore But when Rahane joined Pujara shortly after lunch India were not in a strife but still in a spot of bother Sri Lanka had dislodged a fluent KL Rahul and an in-form Virat Kohli Rangana Herath had settled into a sinister rhythm; the setting up of Kohli was high art Usually in such fine mood he scythes through batting line-ups The close-in fielders formed a nice background score amping up their decibels clapping their hands at anything and lunging themselves on the ground It was perhaps the only passage in the entire series so far that they’d looked fired-up and dominant If they could nail one of them they stood chance to run through the rest However for 51 overs their wish remained just a wish as they ran into two of India’s most resolute batsmen around a pair that was as impregnable as it was indomitable What makes them most difficult to trouble when in such good knick is that they offer few chances Pujara gave one when he was on one but his soft hands ensured it fell beyond the grasp of Angelo Mathews and another that flew past the short-leg’s futile clasp towards the lunch Likewise Rahane offered a more straightforward to the short-leg when he was on 88 But other that they largely looked untroubled and hardly have the hosts even a sniff of a chance Killing them softly They don’t pulverise bowlers to submission with a flurry of boundaries or outlandish strokes like Shikhar Dhawan or to a lesser extent Kohli They rather exhaust them with their subtle nuanced deception — a single here a two there an occasional boundary or six off a gift-wrapped ball Even the big strokes are not instinctive whims but carefully-devised plans to dishevel a bowler’s plan They don’t set the scoreboard in a frenzy but would tax the scorers as much as the bludgeoners for they keep the scorecard ticking along But they are not identical—as is the popular perception—not in temperament nor technique nor strokes nor scoring pattern either It might be that they don’t exude that imposing bravura as some of their other teammates As they showed numerous times in the course of their partnership they are cut from a different cloth Instructive in where they’d made their runs on Thursday As many as 60 off Pujara’s runs were hoarded between square leg and long-on He would either stay back to the spinner and blunt him midwicket or come forward and smother them through mid-on It was the inverse in Rahane’s case—the space between point and mid on fetching him 52 runs He would instinctively drive anything marginally fuller through the offside A classic example of their contrasting styles was how they faced left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara Pujara hung back on the back foot unless it was really full He would tuck and tickle him away through the leg-side Rahane almost always met him full and on a few instances pulled out the sweep as well A stroke that Pujara hardly ventures Pujara was all flicks and wrists; Rahane was all drives and punches Even when the latter cuts he does it in front of point unlike Pujara who plays the cuts fine in a rather old-fashioned way especially the flourish and how his front-leg too goes prominently across While Pujara scored 21 runs behind backward point Rahane scored not a single run Pujara is the classicist; Rahane the moderatist Temperamentally also they are different Pujara is as old-worldish as you can get these days at least in the early half of his innings Rahane is more enterprising He was just four balls old when whipped Herath from off-stump over midwicket It was a risk-fraught stroke as Herath can sometimes skid the ball into the batsman But it was trademark Rahane Pujara would have never ventured such a stroke at any point of the match He could have just offered a dead-defensive blade Pujara’s knocks conform to a general pattern—vigilance till he reaches the 30s before he gathers impetus Rahane’s is a steadier tempo Pujara ate up 112 balls to reach his half-century Rahane absorbed only 83 balls But Pujara’s next 50 took only 51 deliveries Rahane’s came off 67 balls The only thread of sameness is perhaps that they don’t ooze the look-at-me machismo of their peers or even the cricket world at large For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Related NewsThe Delhi Metro’s non-executive staff today threatened gather at the Yamuna Bank station on Sunday evening Thereafter from 0000 hours of 24 July the protesting staff of around 9000 will enforce a total shutdown" secretary of staff council Anil Kumar Mahato said Delhi Metro had in 2015 agreed "in principle" to upgrade pay scale of maintainers from Rs 8000-14410 to Rs 10170-Rs 18700 from July of that year It was also decided to merge the pay scales Rs 13500-Rs 25520 and Rs 14000-Rs 26950 A new pay scale of Rs 20600-Rs 46500 was to be introduced according to the agreement which was decided upon following a similar employee stir Mahato said "Since the recommendations of the 3rd pay commission have been accepted by the government and orders are to be issued any time it is not an opportune moment to press for their demand for revision of pay scales at this juncture All pay related issues shall be dealt shortly after issue of orders by the government" the DMRC management responded The other demands of the agitating staffers include the right to form an union suspension of disciplinary proceedings against three staff members including Mahato and a CBI probe into alleged financial irregularities in the organisation Delhi Metro in a statement said that issues are purely incidental to the individuals and the attempt on their part to push their personal agenda and invoke others to cause disruption is uncalled for "The employees COMMUTING TIME on arterial roads like Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) both sides of the Western Express Highway (WEH) and Tulsi Pipe Road (Dadar to Lower Parel) has increased by 20 per cent on a daily basis in August this year as compared to July last year according to data received from Ridlr a commuter application for traffic planning and e-ticketing Speed of vehicles on these junctions also reduced by 5 kilometre per hour in the corresponding period the data indicated The commuter application combines real time traffic data using GPS data points combined with user inputs to predict travel time According to the data the daily average of vehicles on these roads has reduced in peak-hour traffic time between 9-10 am and 630-730 pm during this period For example the data states the average speed of a vehicle on WEH was 23 km per hour (kmph) between 930 am and 1030 am in August 2017 as compared to 27 kmph in July last year A vehicle which used to ply at 60 kmph then now plies at 52 kmph on Bandra-Worli Sea link road The intensity of traffic during peak hours is different for different routes Overall it’s between 9 and 1030 in the morning for south-bound roads and 630 and 8 in the evening for north-bound lanes Commuters blame it on the construction of Metro 7 (Andheri East-Dahisar East) and Metro 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ line) corridors on these roads The construction work for laying the lines on JVLR WEH for Metro 7 and Peddar Road for Metro 3 started in November last year respectively “I have been using the WEH line for the past seven years The larger problem started after the Metro construction as peak hour traffic worsened I am taking at least 80 minutes to commute between Kandivli and Andheri now as compared to 45-50 minutes last year Opting for public transport like rickshaws also does not help much as they are costly I have started to leave early for work Potholes on the roads compound the problem” said Shalin Jain entrepreneur and marketing professional Dilip Kawatkar joint project director for the MMRDA executing the Metro 7 project said “We have deployed additional manpower to divert traffic on the lanes With the help of traffic police we are managing the situation efficiently It is a temporary phase till monsoons are here and civil works are on By next year the roads will be smooth Metros will eventually help ease commute for those stranded by traffic on these roads” According to the data Rs 28 crore worth of fuel gets wasted every day due to the increased time taken to commute “I travel using Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) and Tulsi Pipe Road every day for commute till Lower Parel They lack planning and not enough is done to accommodate the increasing number of commuters on the road I am spending Rs 200 more on fuel every day Even cab drivers refuse to ply north from south due to the congested road” said Ananya Chand banking professional based out of Vadala Pariosh Desai COO Ridlr said “On an average we have noted 15-20 percent increase in time in travel At Ridlr we help commuters by providing real-time traffic inputs of different modes of transport on social media and advise on traffic updates to improve the overall commute experience” Experts suggest measures like dedicated bus lanes and odd-even rule of vehicles to ease traffic “Simple tricks like these can ease the shortage of space on roads” said transport expert Ashok Datar “We are implementing the heavy vehicle notification We are taking help of traffic wardens and conducting a study on how traffic congestion can be reduced Diversion of routes and counter lanes no parking rules on congested roads are certain measures taken to ease congestion” said Saurabh Tripathi Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Headquarters “We have deployed scientifically designed traffic management plan as approved by the traffic police This includes barricades signage traffic marshals and other road furniture to minimise impact of construction activities Once completed the Metro 3 project will take substantial vehicular traffic off the road” said the official spokesperson of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation For all the latest Mumbai News
